Five nonprofit organizations that are either led by people of color or dedicated to marginalized people and communities of color are getting additional funds for their work thanks to the Rhode Island Foundation’s two giving circles.

Established in 2021, each member of the Black and Latino Giving Circles contributes funds that are matched one-for-one by the Foundation, which continues to demonstrate its commitment to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout Rhode Island. Giving Circle members together decide which nonprofit organizations to support.

More than $34,000 in grants were awarded this year from the 51 Giving Circle donors.

“I give because, as a former recipient of their services, I’m keenly aware of how they transform lives and support families. Even a small investment will have a lasting impact,” said Latino Giving Circle member Adriana Dawson

The Black Giving Circle of 29 donors awarded grants totaling $20,550 to the following nonprofit organizations:

The North End Outreach/Chad Brown Alumni Association is focused on community development and growth through dialogue, service, and mentorship. Its ALPHAs Mentorship program is “an evidence-based program that empowers Black and Hispanic boys and young men in Providence to choose non-violence and leadership in and outside of school.”

The Refugee Dream Center (RDC) is a post-resettlement refugee agency that offers direct services to fill gaps in refugee resettlement while also providing continuation of services to ensure refugee self-reliance and self-sufficiency in Rhode Island.

The Equity Institute, based in Providence, is an education-based nonprofit organization that partners with schools and communities to develop equitable and sustainable learning environments. It accomplishes its mission with trainings, workshops, research, and community building.

The Latino Giving Circle of 22 donors awarded grants totaling $14,000 to the following nonprofit organizations:

RI Latino Dollars for Scholars, Inc., is “committed to increasing the Latino presence at the post-secondary education level by creating partnerships with the private sector, providing academic support and resources, and awarding academic scholarships.” It rewards individual achievements and services to the community.

A dual-language public charter school in Pawtucket, the International Charter School equips students with the skills they need to be successful global citizens and engage in lifelong learning.
