About this data measure
- CDI are infections that can occur as a side-effect of taking antibiotics. Symptoms of CDI include life-threatening diarrhea, fever, and nausea. (Source: CDC)
- Rhode Island’s CDI Standardized Infection Ratio improved since 2017, and has seen a sharp decline in CDI since 2020.
- Rhode Island now ranks in the top 10 nationally, improving its ranking from 51st to 2nd.

How to interpret the Standardized Infection Ratio:
- If the SIR > 1.0, then more infections were observed than predicted, based on the 2015 national aggregate data.
- If the SIR < 1.0, then fewer infections were observed than predicted, based on the 2015 national aggregate data.
- If the SIR= 1.0, then the same number of infections were observed as predicted, based on the 2015 national aggregate data.
