Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in ICUs and select wards, Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR)
About this data measure
- CLABSIs are dangerous and expensive, resulting in thousands of deaths and costs billions of dollars each year across the United States. (Source: CDC)
- Rhode Island’s CLABSI Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR) improved since 2017.
- Since June 2018, Rhode Island’s SIR has remained below 1, which means there were fewer infections than predicted, but a recent increase in CLABSI has moved Rhode Island's ranking outside the top 10 for this indicator.

How to interpret the Standardized Infection Ratio:
- If the SIR > 1.0, then more infections were observed than predicted, based on the 2015 national aggregate data.
- If the SIR < 1.0, then fewer infections were observed than predicted, based on the 2015 national aggregate data.
- If the SIR= 1.0, then the same number of infections were observed as predicted, based on the 2015 national aggregate data.
